My old P.O.S. tripod that i found in my attic has deteriorated to the point where it cant even stand upright. So, its time to upgrade, and upgrade fast. What I have decided through research and some christmas bonuses for funds, I have found:

Fluid head is what i'm most interested in

I have a budget < $250

and through a lot of research, I think i have narrowed it down to a 701HDV head with Manfrotto 190 XDB legs

but i thought it would be a good idea to see if any of you guys (the very few) had any other ideas/thoughts/imput on the subject.

Im in the same boat, except mines not broken (yet). Should I upgrade if all I'm doing is long exposure shots with it? Or will an old p.o.s. be fine?

i ordered the 701 last week and filmed with it over the weekend. It was such a sick buy and such a smooth shot. But for long exposures shots or photography in general, i think it would be a bit overkill, and you should be fine with a tripod that is stable.

what kind of camera do you have? and how does it do on the 701?

I have a Gl2 and maybe will upgrade to an XH-A1 soonish ( I hope), and i'm trying to decide on 701 or 501

I don't really know the difference between the 2 but I do know that either way, you will not be disappointed.

I use a DVC 30, so its smaller than those two cameras, but it works great. A heavier camera might even make it even better to use. The thing I like about the 701 is that the top plate can be adjusted to balance the camera weight on the head, it doesn't just snap into a specific place. I think I will post a full review on NS sometime in the near future.
